Love
List Price: |
DescriptionIt begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott More from the Fab Four The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2 Revolver Sgt. Richard Simmons - Disco Sweat
List Price: |
DescriptionIf your "Saturday Night Fever" has turned into "Saturday Night Flab," let Richard Simmons show you how to shake your booty and drop the pounds with this fun-filled disco-flavored workout that lets you exercise to some of your favorite '70s tunes. 72 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo. Disco Sweat is pure Richard Simmons: "get-up-and-dance" oldies and a bevy of exercisers of all shapes, sizes, and clothing styles, shaking their booties with abandon and joy. This time they're boogying at the "Brooklyn Disco" under flashing lights. The music is all 1970s disco, with songs like "Mighty Real," "Boogie Fever," "Born to Be Alive," "Last Dance," "I Love the Nightlife," and "I Will Survive," accompanied by special effects such as a silver ball overhead or bubbles from a "car wash." Richard's choreography, as always, is easy and accessible to beginners: light, low-impact moves, repeated often. A few songs are especially fast for higher-intensity intervals, but the moves are still low-impact and uncomplicated. An occasional "disco point" of the fingers or "Travolta arms" add effect. After you dance your buns off, Richard takes you to the floor for ab work and stretching. This is a long workout, and if you're just starting, you may not have the stamina to do the whole tape. Just do what you can on this 70-minute video, taking frequent breaks, and each week you'll be able to do more. --Joan Price |

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS]
List Price: |
DescriptionThis is a GREAT movie and will love Disney's adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke |

Firefly - The Complete Series
List Price: |
DescriptionAiring on Fox in 2002-2003, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon's mix of sci-fi spectacle and Western drama followed the ragtag crew of the transport spaceship Serenity. Five hundred years in the future, the men and women of Serenity try to stay one step ahead of the totalitarian Alliance in control of the galaxy while running odd jobs--legal and otherwise--that take them to frontier worlds. Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite, and Ron Glass star. Widescreen; Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital Surround, French Dolby Digital Surround, Spanish Dolby Digital Surround; audio commentary; deleted scenes; featurettes; gag reel; more. 14 episodes on 4 discs. 11 1/4 hrs. As the 2005 theatrical release of Serenity made clear, Firefly was a science fiction concept that deserved a second chance. Devoted fans (or "Browncoats") knew it all along, and with this well-packaged DVD set, those who missed the show's original broadcasts can see what they missed. Creator Joss Whedon's ambitious science-fiction Western (Whedon's third series after Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel) was canceled after only 11 of these 14 episodes had aired on the Fox network, but history has proven that its demise was woefully premature. Whedon's generic hybrid got off to a shaky start when network executives demanded an action-packed one-hour premiere ("The Train Job"); in hindsight the intended two-hour pilot (also titled "Serenity," and oddly enough, the final episode aired) provides a better introduction to the show's concept and splendid ensemble cast. Obsessive fans can debate the quirky logic of combining spaceships with direct parallels to frontier America (it's 500 years in the future, and embattled humankind has expanded into the galaxy, where undeveloped "outer rim" planets struggle with the equivalent of Old West accommodations), but Whedon and his gifted co-writers and directors make it work, at least well enough to fashion a credible context from the incongruous culture-clashing of past, present, and future technologies, along with a polyglot language (the result of two dominant superpowers) that combines English with an abundance of Chinese slang. What makes it work is Whedon's delightfully well-chosen cast and their nine well-developed characters--a typically Whedon-esque extended family--each providing a unique perspective on their adventures aboard Serenity, the junky but beloved "Firefly-class" starship they call home. As a veteran of the disadvantaged Independent faction's war against the all-powerful planetary Alliance (think of it as Underdogs vs. Overlords), Serenity captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads his compact crew on a quest for survival. They're renegades with an amoral agenda, taking any job that pays well, but Firefly's complex tapestry of right and wrong (and peace vs. violence) is richer and deeper than it first appears. Tantalizing clues about Blue Sun (an insidious mega-corporation with a mysteriously evil agenda), its ties to the Alliance, and the traumatizing use of Serenity's resident stowaway (Summer Glau) as a guinea pig in the development of advanced warfare were clear indications Firefly was heading for exciting revelations that were precluded by the series' cancellation. Fortunately, the big-screen Serenity (which can be enjoyed independently of the series) ensured that Whedon's wild extraterrestrial west had not seen its final sunset. Its very existence confirms that these 14 episodes (and enjoyable bonus features) will endure as irrefutable proof Fox made a glaring mistake in canceling the series. --Jeff Shannon Beyond Firefly on DVD Watch Stargate: Continuum on DVD Catch up on Stargate Atlantis on DVD Check out Sunshine on DVD Stills from Firefly (Click for larger image) Features

Secondhand Lions
List Price: |
DescriptionFeatures include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: DVD•Runtime: 109 minutes If you can get past its thick layer of syrup and molasses, Secondhand Lions reveals itself as a thoroughly decent family film that anyone can enjoy. It gets a little sappy sometimes, but there's something to be said for a movie in which Michael Caine and Robert Duvall play eccentric old brothers who take the easy approach to fishing: instead of a peaceful rod and reel, they use 12-gauge shotguns. When 14-year-old Walter (Haley Joel Osment, teetering on puberty) spends an eventful summer with his great-uncles on their vast Texas farmland (he's been dumped there by his delinquent mom, played by Kyra Sedgwick), he soon discovers they've lived lives full of adventure, excitement, passion, and mystery. Either that or they're old-time bank robbers with a long criminal record, and writer-director Tim McCanlies (who invested similar warmth into The Iron Giant) does a nice job of concealing the truth until the very end. Full of enriching lessons and homespun humor, Secondhand Lions has more substance than most family films. If you enjoyed Holes, you'll probably enjoy this movie, too. --Jeff Shannon Features
